How to Extract .RAR Files for Free on Windows and MacOS

By Admin - Friday, 17 September 2021 No Comments

Have you ever downloaded a file with a strange .rar file extension? RAR is a compressed archive format that is very similar to a ZIP archive. This article describes how to open a RAR file on Windows or macOS.

What is the RAR file extension?

RAR is the native format of the WinRAR archive. A RAR file is a data container that can store one or more files in compressed format. The extension is .rar.

RAR offers many advanced features compared to other compression tools.

How to open a RAR file on Windows:

Windows has a wide variety of applications that can open RAR files. The default option is WinRAR, which was created by the RAR file format developer, but it is not a free application. WinRAR is the best way to create RAR archives.

1. If you want to open a RAR file (e.g. an email attachment or a download), just double click the .rar file and it will show up in WinRAR. Then you can choose the files or folders to extract / open.

2. Click the Extract To icon at the top of the WinRAR window and choose the destination folder (the folder where you want to save the contents of the RAR file). Click OK.

The extracted files are in the saved folder.

Other Way to Open a RAR File in Windows:

1. Right-click on the RAR file and choose "Open with WinRAR".
2. Then choose location and extract files

Open a RAR File in macOS:

There aren't as many options for opening RAR files on macOS as there are on the more popular Windows platforms. However, there are still a few. We recommend The Unarchiver, a free application that is very compatible with multi-part archive files.

1. After the installation you can start Unarchiver and assign the file type to your application.

2. After you've linked the file types, just double-click the file to extract the RAR file. Unarchiver creates a folder with the same name as the archive and extracts its contents into a new folder. Note that if you are using a multipart RAR file, you must open the first file in the set. Unarchiver handles additional files in the set automatically.
